Openclaw cli: OpenClaw: Image Tool `tools.fs.workspaceOnly` Bypass via Sandbox Bridge Mounts (CVE-2026-35658)

Medium
Published: 08/13/2026 (08/13/2026, 17:21:32 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: openclaw-cli

Description

A vulnerability in the OpenClaw CLI image tool allowed bypass of the tools.fs.workspaceOnly filesystem boundary. This flaw enabled image-path resolution to traverse sandbox bridge mounts outside the designated workspace, potentially exposing files from mounted directories that other file tools would block. The issue affects openclaw versions prior to 2026.3.2 and was fixed in version 2026.3.2.

Technical Analysis

The OpenClaw CLI image tool did not fully enforce the tools.fs.workspaceOnly filesystem boundary, allowing image-path resolution to access files outside the intended workspace via sandbox bridge mounts. This bypass could lead to unauthorized reading of files from mounted directories that should have been restricted. The vulnerability affects openclaw npm package versions from 2026.1.29 up to but not including 2026.3.2. The issue was addressed by passing the fsPolicy into createImageTool and restricting local roots and sandbox-bridge resolution to the workspace when tools.fs.workspaceOnly is enabled. The fix was released in version 2026.3.2 and remains in later versions.

Potential Impact

An attacker with at least low privileges (PR:L) could exploit this vulnerability to read files outside the intended workspace boundary, potentially accessing sensitive information. The vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 score of 6.5 (medium severity) with high confidentiality impact but no integrity or availability impact.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available and should be applied by upgrading openclaw to version 2026.3.2 or later. The fix ensures that the image tool enforces the workspace-only filesystem policy consistently, preventing traversal outside the workspace via sandbox bridge mounts.
