Openclaw cli: OpenClaw: macOS beta onboarding exposed PKCE verifier via OAuth state (CVE-2026-3691)
Description
The OpenClaw macOS app beta onboarding flow exposed the OAuth PKCE code_verifier value via the OAuth state parameter in the front-channel URL. This vulnerability affected OpenClaw CLI versions from 2026.1.29 up to but not including 2026.2.25. The issue was limited to the macOS beta onboarding OAuth path and did not affect the core CLI or gateway onboarding paths. The exposure could allow an attacker to obtain sensitive OAuth authorization artifacts if they intercepted the state parameter during the flow. The vulnerability has been patched by removing Anthropic OAuth sign-in from the macOS onboarding flow and replacing it with a setup-token-only authentication method. The fix is available starting with version 2026.2.25.

Technical Analysis
CVE-2026-3691 describes a vulnerability in the OpenClaw CLI macOS beta onboarding flow where the OAuth PKCE code_verifier was improperly used as the OAuth state parameter, exposing this secret in the front-channel URL. This exposure could potentially allow attackers to gain sensitive OAuth authorization information if they intercepted the URL during the onboarding process. The vulnerability affects OpenClaw versions >=2026.1.29 and <2026.2.25. The issue was addressed by removing the vulnerable OAuth sign-in method from the macOS onboarding path and switching to a setup-token-only authentication approach. The patch was released in version 2026.2.25.
Potential Impact
The impact is limited to the macOS beta onboarding OAuth path of OpenClaw CLI. Exploitation requires an attacker to obtain both the OAuth authorization artifacts and the exposed state parameter containing the PKCE code_verifier. This exposure could compromise the OAuth authorization process for affected users during onboarding. The core CLI and gateway onboarding paths are not affected.
Mitigation Recommendations
A patch is available in OpenClaw CLI version 2026.2.25 that removes the vulnerable Anthropic OAuth sign-in from the macOS onboarding flow and replaces it with a setup-token-only authentication method. Users should upgrade to version 2026.2.25 or later to mitigate this vulnerability.
