Technical Analysis

The openclaw-cli package contained a flaw where Matrix verification notices could bypass DM access checks, enabling replies to peers that were unpaired or outside the allowed DM policy. This vulnerability was confirmed in version 2026.3.24 and resolved in commit 2383daf5c4a4e08d9553e0e949552ad755ef9ec2, which introduced a gate on verification notices based on DM access before sending them.

Potential Impact

An attacker could exploit this vulnerability to send verification notices in direct messages to peers that should be restricted by DM policy, potentially leading to unauthorized communication or information disclosure within the Matrix protocol environment. There is no indication of privilege escalation, service disruption, or data corruption.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available and should be applied by upgrading openclaw-cli to version 2026.3.25 or later. The fix gates verification notices on DM access checks, preventing bypass of DM policies. Users should update to the fixed version to mitigate this vulnerability.
