Source: GCVE Database
Product: openclaw-cli

Description

OpenClaw CLI versions before 2026.2.24 contain a vulnerability where message actions 'sendAttachment' and 'setGroupIcon' can hydrate media from local absolute paths if the 'sandboxRoot' is unset. This bypasses local media root checks and could allow reading arbitrary files accessible to the runtime user. The issue is fixed in version 2026.2.24 and later.

Technical Analysis

The OpenClaw CLI package (npm) versions up to 2026.2.23 have a vulnerability identified as CVE-2026-27522. When the 'sandboxRoot' configuration is unset, the message actions 'sendAttachment' and 'setGroupIcon' can hydrate media from local absolute paths, bypassing intended local media root restrictions. This flaw allows an attacker who can trigger authorized message-action paths to read arbitrary files accessible by the runtime user on the host system. The vulnerability is patched starting with version 2026.2.24, which includes the fix commit 270ab03e379f9653e15f7033c9830399b66b7e51.

Potential Impact

An attacker able to trigger the vulnerable message actions can read arbitrary files on the host system that are accessible by the runtime user. This could lead to unauthorized disclosure of sensitive information stored locally. There is no indication of privilege escalation or remote code execution. No known exploits in the wild have been reported.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade the OpenClaw CLI package to version 2026.2.24 or later, which contains the official fix for this vulnerability. Until the upgrade is applied, avoid triggering the 'sendAttachment' and 'setGroupIcon' message actions when 'sandboxRoot' is unset.
