Description

OpenClaw CLI versions from 2026.1.29 up to but not including 2026.5.2 have a vulnerability where message.action forwarding can send Gateway credentials to model-supplied loopback URLs. This occurs when model-controlled action metadata selects a loopback Gateway URL, potentially exposing tokens and action payloads to a local listener. The vulnerability depends on the operator's configuration and whether untrusted input can reach this path. A patch is available in version 2026.5.2. Mitigations include restricting message action forwarding, avoiding model-supplied loopback targets until patched, and narrowing allowlists.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in OpenClaw CLI involves message.action forwarding that may send Gateway credentials to loopback URLs supplied by the model. This can expose sensitive tokens and action payloads to local listeners chosen through this forwarding path. The issue is scoped to the feature and configuration described and does not alter the trusted-operator model of OpenClaw. The vulnerability affects versions >=2026.1.29 and <2026.5.2. The first stable patched version is 2026.5.2.

Potential Impact

If the affected feature is enabled and reachable, Gateway credentials and action payloads could be exposed to a local listener specified by the model. The practical impact depends on the operator's configuration and whether lower-trust input can reach the vulnerable forwarding path. This could lead to unauthorized access to Gateway credentials within the local environment.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available in version 2026.5.2. Until patched, restrict message action forwarding and avoid using model-supplied loopback targets. Additionally, narrow channel and tool allowlists, avoid sharing one Gateway between mutually untrusted users, and disable the affected feature when not needed.
