Openclaw cli: OpenClaw: Multiple Code Paths Missing Base64 Pre-Allocation Size Checks (CVE-2026-42420)

Medium
Published: 08/13/2026 (08/13/2026, 17:21:32 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: openclaw-cli

Description

OpenClaw CLI versions up to 2026.4.7 contain multiple code paths where base64 decoding operations do not properly enforce pre-allocation size limits. This can lead to allocation issues during base64 decoding. The vulnerability affects local user-controlled instances of OpenClaw and does not assume multi-tenant service boundaries. A patch fixing these issues is available in version 2026.4.8.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-42420 describes multiple code paths in OpenClaw CLI's base64 decoding implementation that lack proper pre-allocation size checks before decoding. This flaw can cause memory allocation issues due to unchecked decoded-size limits. The vulnerability is scoped to local user-controlled environments and does not affect multi-tenant service boundaries. The issue was fixed in commit d7c3210cd6f5fdfdc1beff4c9541673e814354d5 and released in OpenClaw CLI version 2026.4.8.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability can cause denial of service or application instability due to improper memory allocation during base64 decoding. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity. The CVSS v3.1 score is 4.3 (medium severity), reflecting a network attack vector with low complexity and no user interaction required, but limited to local privileges.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade OpenClaw CLI to version 2026.4.8 or later, where the issue has been fixed. The fix has been verified with targeted regression tests. No additional mitigation is required beyond applying the official patch.
