Openclaw cli: OpenClaw: Node exec approvals could be replayed across nodes

Description

OpenClaw CLI versions up to 2026.2.22-2 contain a vulnerability where exec.approval requests for host=node were not bound to a specific nodeId. This allowed an operator's approval for a system.run request on one node to be replayed on a different node within the same gateway fleet. The issue is fixed in version 2026.2.23 by requiring and persisting nodeId for approval requests and rejecting execution if the node binding does not match. Users should upgrade to 2026.2.23 or later to remediate this issue.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in OpenClaw CLI involves exec.approval requests for host=node not being explicitly tied to the target nodeId, enabling replay of an approval intended for one node on another node under the same operator-controlled gateway fleet. This could allow reuse of an operator approval for a system.run request across nodes if the request payload lacks node identity verification. The fix, released in version 2026.2.23, enforces nodeId binding for approval requests and rejects execution when the approving node does not match the invoking node.

Potential Impact

An attacker or operator with approval privileges could reuse an approval for a system.run request across different nodes, potentially leading to unauthorized command execution on nodes other than the originally approved one. This undermines node-specific authorization controls within the gateway fleet.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade OpenClaw CLI to version 2026.2.23 or later, which includes the fix that binds exec.approval requests to specific nodeIds and rejects execution if the node binding does not match. This patch is officially released and addresses the vulnerability.
