Technical Analysis

The OpenClaw CLI has a security flaw identified as CVE-2026-42431 where the node.invoke(browser.proxy) method can mutate persistent browser profiles by bypassing the browser.request guard designed to prevent such mutations. This vulnerability affects versions of the openclaw npm package from 2026.1.29 up to but not including 2026.4.8. The issue was fixed in commit d7c3210cd6f5fdfdc1beff4c9541673e814354d5 and the fix is included in version 2026.4.8. The vulnerability is scoped to the OpenClaw trust model and does not consider multi-tenant service boundaries.

Potential Impact

An attacker with local user privileges can bypass the persistent profile-mutation guard in OpenClaw, potentially altering persistent browser profiles without detection. This could lead to unauthorized changes in browser behavior or configuration, impacting confidentiality and integrity. The CVSS v3.1 score is 8.1 (high), indicating a significant impact on confidentiality and integrity with no impact on availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

Users should upgrade to openclaw version 2026.4.8 or later, which contains the official fix for this vulnerability. The fix has been verified with targeted regression tests. No additional mitigations are specified or required beyond applying the patch.
