Product: openclaw-cli

Description

OpenClaw CLI versions from 2026.1.29 up to but not including 2026.5.4 contain a vulnerability where authorized non-owner chat senders can issue device-pairing bootstrap codes via the /pair command. This allows them to enroll devices with operator/node capabilities, which retain persistent credentials until removed. The vulnerability requires the attacker to already have permission to send commands through a configured chat channel and does not affect unauthenticated users. The issue is fixed in version 2026.5.4.

Technical Analysis

The bundled device-pair plugin in OpenClaw CLI exposed the /pair command on normal chat command surfaces. In affected versions, authorized non-owner chat senders—such as users in Telegram, Discord, or Slack agents with command permissions—could generate device-pairing bootstrap codes without having owner, admin, or pairing scope. This allowed these users to enroll devices with elevated operator/node capabilities, which maintain persistent credentials until explicitly removed. The vulnerability does not impact unauthenticated users and requires prior command authorization. The issue is resolved in OpenClaw CLI version 2026.5.4.

Potential Impact

An authorized non-owner user with chat command access could create device-pairing bootstrap codes and enroll devices with operator/node privileges. These devices retain persistent credentials, potentially allowing unauthorized elevated access to the system until the devices are removed. This could lead to compromise of confidentiality and integrity, with limited availability impact.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade OpenClaw CLI to version 2026.5.4 or later. Review all paired devices and remove any unexpected or unauthorized entries. Limit chat command access in shared channels to only those users who should manage device pairing to reduce risk.
