Openclaw cli: OpenClaw: OpenShell FS bridge writes stay pinned to the sandbox mount root (CVE-2026-44112)

Source: GCVE Database
Product: openclaw-cli

Description

Openclaw CLI versions up to 2026.4.21 contain a vulnerability where OpenShell filesystem bridge writes can be redirected outside the sandbox mount root due to a time-of-check/time-of-use (TOCTOU) race condition involving symlink swaps. This could allow unauthorized modification of files outside the intended sandbox. The issue is fixed in version 2026.4.22 by validating write paths against the mount root and rejecting unsafe symlinks.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-44112 describes a TOCTOU race condition in the OpenShell FS bridge component of openclaw CLI (npm package). Specifically, writes intended for the sandbox mount root can be redirected outside it by exploiting symlink swaps between the time of check and time of use. The fix, introduced in version 2026.4.22, involves validating canonical write targets against the mount root, rejecting unsafe symlink parents and leaves, and using root-scoped write helpers before syncing to the remote sandbox. This prevents writes from escaping the sandbox boundary.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows an attacker with limited privileges to redirect filesystem writes outside the sandboxed environment, potentially modifying files beyond the intended scope. This impacts the integrity of the system by enabling unauthorized file modifications. Confidentiality and availability are not affected according to the CVSS vector.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available in openclaw CLI version 2026.4.22. Users should upgrade to this version or later to remediate the vulnerability. The fix includes path validation and symlink checks to prevent unsafe writes outside the sandbox mount root.
