Product: openclaw-cli

Description

The OpenClaw CLI had a vulnerability in the /pair approve command where the caller's scopes were not forwarded during device approval checks. This allowed a user with pairing privileges but without admin rights to approve device pairing requests that requested broader scopes, including admin access. The issue was fixed in version 2026.3.28.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-33579 describes a flaw in the OpenClaw CLI's /pair approve command path. The command failed to forward the caller's scopes into the core approval logic, enabling a user with pairing privileges but lacking admin privileges to approve device pairing requests that requested elevated scopes such as admin access. The vulnerability affects versions from 2026.1.29 up to but not including 2026.3.28. The issue was resolved by commit 4ee4960de2 which ensures caller scopes are forwarded during approval checks.

Potential Impact

An attacker with pairing privileges but without admin privileges could escalate their access by approving device pairing requests that ask for broader scopes, including admin-level access. This could lead to unauthorized administrative control over the device or system.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available and included starting from OpenClaw CLI version 2026.3.28. Users should upgrade to version 2026.3.28 or later to remediate this vulnerability. No additional mitigation steps are indicated by the vendor advisory.
