Description

OpenClaw CLI versions prior to 2026.4.2 contain a vulnerability in the QQ Bot structured media payload handling that allows reading arbitrary local files on the host. This occurs because crafted payloads can escape the intended media root directories, leading to unauthorized file reads. The issue is fixed in version 2026.4.2 by restricting local path access in structured payloads.

Technical Analysis

Before OpenClaw version 2026.4.2, the QQ Bot component's structured media payloads could be crafted to read arbitrary local files from attacker-chosen paths on the host system. This vulnerability allows an attacker to escape the QQ Bot media root directories and exfiltrate any file readable by the OpenClaw process via the media-send path. The flaw represents a confidentiality breach of the host filesystem boundary. The issue is patched in OpenClaw 2026.4.2 by restricting local path access in QQ Bot structured payloads.

Potential Impact

An attacker can cause the OpenClaw process to read and exfiltrate arbitrary local files on the host system through the QQ Bot media-send functionality. This leads to a confidentiality breach of any file accessible by the OpenClaw process user. There is no indication of privilege escalation or integrity impact.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade OpenClaw CLI to version 2026.4.2 or later, which includes a fix restricting QQ Bot structured payload local paths to prevent arbitrary file reads. Until the patch is applied, avoid processing untrusted QQ Bot structured media payloads.
