Description

A vulnerability in the openclaw CLI's QQBot media tags allows reading arbitrary local files via reply text. This occurs because outbound media tags can reference local file paths outside the intended media storage boundary, leading to local file disclosure. The issue affects openclaw versions before 2026.4.10 and was fixed in version 2026.4.10 and later.

Technical Analysis

The openclaw CLI's QQBot media tags feature had a security flaw where outbound media tags in AI reply text could reference host-local file paths beyond the designated media storage boundary. This allowed an attacker to cause the bot to disclose arbitrary local files through outbound media handling. The vulnerability was addressed by enforcing the media storage boundary for all outbound QQBot local file paths. The fix was implemented in pull request #63271 and included starting from version 2026.4.10.

Potential Impact

An attacker could exploit this vulnerability to read arbitrary local files on the host system by manipulating QQBot media tags in AI reply text. This leads to local file disclosure, potentially exposing sensitive information stored on the host. There is no indication of privilege escalation, remote code execution, or other impacts beyond local file disclosure.

Mitigation Recommendations

Users should upgrade to openclaw version 2026.4.10 or later to remediate this vulnerability. The fix enforces proper media storage boundaries, preventing local file disclosure through QQBot media tags. The latest npm release, 2026.4.14, includes this fix. No additional mitigation steps are required once upgraded.
