Openclaw cli: OpenClaw replaced a deprecated sandbox hash algorithm (CVE-2026-28479)

Medium
Published: 08/13/2026 (08/13/2026, 17:21:32 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: openclaw-cli

Description

OpenClaw CLI versions up to 2026.2.14 used the deprecated SHA-1 hashing algorithm for sandbox identifier cache keys. This hashing was used to determine if existing sandbox containers could be safely reused. Because SHA-1 is vulnerable to collisions, this posed a risk of cache poisoning and unsafe sandbox state reuse. The vulnerability is fixed in version 2026.2.15 by replacing SHA-1 with SHA-256 for these hashes, restoring collision resistance.

Technical Analysis

The openclaw npm package versions >=2026.1.29 and <2026.2.15 used SHA-1 to hash normalized Docker/browser sandbox configuration payloads for sandbox identifier cache keys. SHA-1's known collision weaknesses could allow one configuration to be mistaken for another, risking cache poisoning and unsafe reuse of sandbox containers. The fix replaces SHA-1 with SHA-256 in the deterministic hashing process, mitigating collision risks. The patch is included in version 2026.2.15.

Potential Impact

An attacker could exploit SHA-1 collisions to cause sandbox cache poisoning, leading to reuse of sandbox containers with incorrect configurations. This could compromise sandbox isolation integrity, potentially allowing unsafe sandbox states. The impact is limited to confidentiality and integrity with no availability impact reported.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available in openclaw version 2026.2.15 that replaces SHA-1 with SHA-256 for sandbox cache key hashing. Users should upgrade to version 2026.2.15 or later to mitigate this vulnerability.
