Published: 08/13/2026 (08/13/2026, 17:21:32 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: openclaw-cli

Description

A vulnerability in openclaw-cli's jq safe-bin policy allowed environment variable disclosure via the $ENV filter, bypassing restrictions intended to block explicit env usage. This could expose sensitive environment data through operator-approved jq commands. The issue affects versions from 2026.1.29 up to but not including 2026.3.28. The vulnerability is fixed in version 2026.3.28.

Technical Analysis

The jq safe-bin policy in openclaw-cli blocked explicit use of the 'env' function but did not prevent jq programs from accessing environment variables through the '$ENV' filter. This bypass allowed operator-approved safe-bin jq commands to disclose environment variables that the policy was designed to restrict. The vulnerability is located in the component 'src/infra/exec-safe-bin-semantics.ts' and was fixed by commit 78e2f3d66d, which tightened jq safe-bin environment checks. Versions up to 2026.3.24 are affected, with the fix included starting from 2026.3.28.

Potential Impact

An attacker with the ability to run operator-approved safe-bin jq commands could access environment variables that should have been out of scope, potentially exposing sensitive information. The vulnerability does not affect integrity or availability but has a high confidentiality impact.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available and should be applied. Users should upgrade to openclaw-cli version 2026.3.28 or later, which contains the fix that tightens jq safe-bin environment variable access checks.
