Description

A sandbox boundary validation flaw in openclaw-cli versions up to 2026.2.25 allowed certain workspace-only write operations to bypass the sandbox boundary via dangling symlink alias handling. This could result in writes occurring outside the intended workspace or sandbox root, potentially compromising host file integrity. The issue is fixed in version 2026.2.26.

Technical Analysis

Openclaw-cli versions <= 2026.2.25 contain a vulnerability where dangling symlink hops during boundary checks are improperly accepted under missing-target conditions. This flaw allows workspace-only write operations, such as apply_patch, to resolve paths outside the configured sandbox boundary, bypassing intended write restrictions. The patch in version 2026.2.26 fixes this by resolving symlink targets through ancestor directories and failing closed if canonical resolution escapes the sandbox root.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows boundary-confined write operations to be redirected outside the configured workspace or sandbox root. This can lead to unauthorized modification of host-side files accessible via the resolved paths, impacting confidentiality, integrity, and availability of affected files.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available in openclaw-cli version 2026.2.26. Users should upgrade to this version once published to remediate the vulnerability. No additional mitigation is required beyond applying the official fix.
