Description

A sandbox path validation bypass vulnerability in the openclaw CLI allows unauthorized reading of host files outside the intended sandboxRoot. This occurs when the fallback temporary directory used by openclaw is a symlink alias, enabling media paths under this fallback root to escape sandbox confinement. The issue affects openclaw versions up to 2026.2.24 and is fixed in version 2026.2.25.

Technical Analysis

The openclaw CLI contains a sandbox path validation bypass vulnerability in its media path fallback mechanism. When the primary tmp directory (/tmp/openclaw) is unavailable or unsafe, openclaw falls back to a tmp directory under os.tmpdir() without verifying that this fallback path is a trusted, non-symlink directory. If this fallback tmp root is a symlink alias (e.g., pointing to /), the function resolveSandboxedMediaSource() can be tricked into accepting absolute media paths that resolve outside the sandboxRoot, allowing unauthorized host file reads. This vulnerability affects openclaw versions <= 2026.2.24 and is patched in 2026.2.25.

Potential Impact

This vulnerability breaks sandbox media path confinement, permitting unauthorized reading of host files outside the sandboxRoot. The impact is a confidentiality breach, as sensitive host files can be accessed by bypassing sandbox restrictions.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available in openclaw version 2026.2.25 that fixes the sandbox path validation bypass. Users should upgrade to version 2026.2.25 or later to remediate this issue.
