Description

OpenClaw CLI versions up to 2026.2.26 contain a time-of-check/time-of-use (TOCTOU) vulnerability in sandbox media handling. This flaw allows a symlink attack to cause media reads outside the intended sandbox root directory, potentially exposing host files. The issue arises because media paths are validated at one point and read later through a different path, allowing a race condition. The vulnerability is fixed in version 2026.3.1 by consolidating media read paths to be root-scoped and boundary-safe, eliminating the TOCTOU gap.

Technical Analysis

The OpenClaw CLI sandbox media handling had a TOCTOU vulnerability where media paths were first validated and then read later via a separate path. This separation allowed an attacker to retarget a symlink between the check and use steps, causing file reads outside the sandbox root. This affects versions up to 2026.2.26. The fix in 2026.3.1 consolidates media reads to a single root-scoped, boundary-safe path at use time, removing the check/use drift and preventing unauthorized file access outside the sandbox.

Potential Impact

Affected versions permit unauthorized reading of host files outside the sandbox root during media attachment or image processing flows. This could lead to exposure of sensitive files on the host system that should be inaccessible within the sandbox environment.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available in OpenClaw CLI version 2026.3.1 that fixes the TOCTOU vulnerability by consolidating media read paths to be root-scoped and boundary-safe. Users should upgrade to version 2026.3.1 or later to remediate this issue.
