Description

A race condition vulnerability in openclaw-cli's sandbox file system bridge writeFile commit step allows an attacker to bypass sandbox boundaries by redirecting file writes outside the validated sandbox path. This affects versions prior to 2026.3.11 and is fixed in that version.

Technical Analysis

The openclaw-cli package contains a sandbox boundary bypass vulnerability (CVE-2026-32977) due to a race condition in the writeFile commit step of the sandbox fs-bridge. The final move operation used an unanchored container path, allowing an attacker to race parent-path changes inside the sandbox and redirect the committed file outside the validated sandbox path. The vulnerability affects openclaw versions prior to 2026.3.11. The issue was fixed by anchoring the writeFile commit path to the canonical parent directory before the final move in version 2026.3.11.

Potential Impact

An attacker with in-sandbox code execution can exploit a time-of-check-time-of-use race condition to cause host-approved writeFile operations to write files outside the intended sandbox writable path. This bypasses sandbox restrictions and can lead to unauthorized file modifications on the host system. The CVSS score is 6.3 (medium severity) with impact on integrity and availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade openclaw-cli to version 2026.3.11 or later, where the vulnerability is fixed by anchoring the writeFile commit path to prevent the race condition. No other workarounds are indicated.
