Openclaw cli: OpenClaw session transcript files were created without forced user-only permissions (CVE-2026-33572)

Published: 08/13/2026 (08/13/2026, 17:21:32 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: openclaw-cli

Description

OpenClaw CLI versions up to 2026.2.15 created session transcript JSONL files with overly broad default permissions, allowing other local users on the same host to potentially read sensitive transcript contents. This issue was fixed starting with version 2026.2.17 by enforcing user-only file permissions (0o600) on new transcript files and remediating existing permission drift.

Technical Analysis

The OpenClaw CLI tool created session transcript files with permissions that were not restricted to the owning user, resulting in potential exposure of sensitive information to other local users or processes on multi-user systems. The vulnerability affects versions from 2026.1.29 up to but not including 2026.2.17. The fix enforces creation of transcript files with mode 0o600, ensuring only the file owner can read or write these files. This fix was introduced in commit 095d522099653367e1b76fa5bb09d4ddf7c8a57c and shipped in version 2026.2.17, with the current latest release 2026.3.13 confirmed not affected.

Potential Impact

On multi-user hosts, other local users or processes could read session transcript files containing potentially sensitive information, including secrets that might appear in the tool output. This could lead to unauthorized disclosure of confidential data stored in these transcripts.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available and should be applied by upgrading to OpenClaw CLI version 2026.2.17 or later. The fix enforces user-only permissions (0o600) on newly created transcript files and includes remediation of existing transcript file permissions. No additional action is required beyond applying the official fix.
