Openclaw cli: OpenClaw: Silent privilege escalation via gateway shared-auth reconnect (CVE-2026-35625)

Published: 08/13/2026 (08/13/2026, 17:21:32 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: openclaw-cli

Description

OpenClaw CLI versions up to 2026.3.24 contain a vulnerability where a local shared-auth reconnect can silently escalate privileges from operator.read to operator.admin. This escalation allows a paired device to gain higher privileges without explicit user approval, potentially leading to remote code execution on the reach node. The issue is fixed in version 2026.3.25 by blocking silent reconnect scope upgrades and requiring explicit pairing approval for scope changes.

Technical Analysis

The OpenClaw CLI vulnerability (CVE-2026-35625) involves a silent privilege escalation via the gateway's local shared-auth reconnect mechanism. Previously, silent reconnects could auto-approve scope upgrades, widening a paired device's permissions from operator.read to operator.admin without explicit user consent. This escalation could lead to remote code execution on the reach node. The vulnerability affects versions up to 2026.3.24 and is fixed in 2026.3.25 by commit 81ebc7e0344fd19c85778e883bad45e2da972229, which enforces explicit approval for scope upgrades during reconnects.

Potential Impact

An attacker with local access to the gateway could exploit the silent shared-auth reconnect to escalate privileges from operator.read to operator.admin on a paired device. This elevated privilege could then be used to execute code remotely on the reach node, increasing the attack surface and potential damage.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available and should be applied by upgrading to OpenClaw CLI version 2026.3.25 or later. The fix blocks silent reconnect scope upgrades and requires explicit pairing approval for any scope elevation. Users should update promptly to mitigate this vulnerability.
