Openclaw cli: OpenClaw: SSH-based sandbox backends pass unsanitized process.env to child processes (CVE-2026-41357)

Source: GCVE Database
Product: openclaw-cli

Description

OpenClaw CLI versions prior to 2026.3.31 have a vulnerability where SSH-based sandbox backends pass unsanitized environment variables (process.env) to child processes. This can lead to local environment variable leakage in SSH child processes. Remote leakage requires non-default SSH environment forwarding, which is not common, so the severity is considered low. The issue is fixed in version 2026.3.31.

Technical Analysis

The OpenClaw CLI package (npm) versions from 2026.1.29 up to but not including 2026.3.31 contain a vulnerability (CVE-2026-41357) where SSH-based sandbox backends pass unsanitized process.env environment variables to child processes. This can cause local environment variables to leak into SSH child processes. Remote environment leakage requires non-default SSH environment forwarding, reducing the risk. The vulnerability has been patched in version 2026.3.31 by commit cfe14459531e002a1c61c27d97ec7dc8aecddc1f.

Potential Impact

Local SSH child processes may receive unsanitized environment variables, potentially exposing sensitive local environment data. Remote exploitation is limited because it requires non-default SSH environment forwarding, which is not enabled by default. No known exploits are reported in the wild.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade OpenClaw CLI to version 2026.3.31 or later, which contains the official fix. No additional mitigation is required as the patch fully addresses the vulnerability.
