Openclaw cli: OpenClaw: stageSandboxMedia destination symlink traversal can overwrite files outside sandbox workspace (CVE-2026-31990)

Published: 08/13/2026 (08/13/2026, 17:21:32 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: openclaw-cli

Description

The OpenClaw CLI contained a vulnerability in the stageSandboxMedia function that allowed destination symlink traversal during media staging. This flaw could enable overwriting files outside the intended sandbox workspace by following symlinks in the destination path. The issue affected openclaw versions up to 2026.3.1 and was fixed in version 2026.3.2 by enforcing safe write primitives that prevent symlink traversal escapes.

Technical Analysis

The stageSandboxMedia function in openclaw-cli did not enforce destination boundary or alias checks when writing staged media files, allowing writes to follow symlinks in the destination path under media/inbound. This could lead to overwriting files outside the sandbox workspace root. The vulnerability affects openclaw versions <= 2026.3.1 and was patched in 2026.3.2 by routing staging writes through root-scoped safe write primitives for both local and SCP-staged attachments, preventing symlink traversal.

Potential Impact

An attacker able to stage media files could exploit symlink traversal to overwrite arbitrary files outside the sandbox workspace, potentially leading to unauthorized file modification on the host system. This breaks sandbox isolation and could compromise system integrity.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available and has been released in openclaw version 2026.3.2. Users should upgrade to version 2026.3.2 or later to mitigate this vulnerability. The fix ensures all staging writes are performed through safe write primitives that prevent destination symlink traversal.
