Openclaw cli: OpenClaw: system.run approvals did not bind PATH-token executable identity, enabling post-approval executable rebind (CVE-2026-31997)

Source: GCVE Database
Product: openclaw-cli

Description

OpenClaw CLI versions up to 2026.2.26 have a vulnerability where system.run approvals do not bind the executable identity for commands resolved via PATH tokens. This allows a previously approved action to execute a different binary if the PATH resolution changes after approval. The issue is fixed in version 2026.3.1 by requiring immutable systemRunPlan data and pinning path-token commands to their canonical executable identity.

Technical Analysis

The OpenClaw CLI's system.run approvals for host=node runs validated the command context but failed to pin the executable identity for non-path-like argv[0] tokens (e.g., 'tr'). If the PATH environment changed after approval, execution could run a different binary than originally approved. The fix enforces immutable systemRunPlan data and pins path-token commands to their canonical executable identity using realpath, preventing executable rebind attacks.

Potential Impact

An attacker or operator could cause a previously approved command to execute a different executable than intended if the PATH resolution changes after approval. This could lead to unauthorized code execution under the guise of an approved action.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available in OpenClaw CLI version 2026.3.1 that fixes this issue by enforcing immutable systemRunPlan data and pinning executable identities. Users should upgrade to version 2026.3.1 or later to remediate this vulnerability.
