Openclaw cli: OpenClaw: Unbound interpreter and runtime commands could bypass node-host approval integrity (CVE-2026-32979)

Source: GCVE Database
Product: openclaw-cli

Description

OpenClaw CLI versions up to 2026.3.10 have a vulnerability where node-host system.run approvals can be bypassed, allowing execution of unintended local code. This occurs because the approval process fails to bind exactly one concrete local file operand for certain interpreter and runtime commands, leading to approval integrity gaps. The issue is fixed in version 2026.3.11, which enforces strict binding requirements and extends direct-file binding for runtime forms.

Technical Analysis

In affected versions of openclaw (<= 2026.3.10), the node-host system.run approval mechanism could approve a benign local script but then execute different local code if the script changed before execution. This happens because some interpreter and runtime commands were treated as approval-backed even when OpenClaw could not bind exactly one concrete local file operand during approval planning. This approval-integrity gap allows unintended local code execution as the OpenClaw runtime user. The vulnerability is fixed in [email protected] by enforcing a fail-closed approach for approval-backed commands unless exactly one concrete local file operand can be bound, and by extending best-effort direct-file binding for additional runtime forms.

Potential Impact

Deployments using node-host system.run approval mode are at risk of executing unintended local code if a benign approved script is modified before execution. This can lead to local code execution with the privileges of the OpenClaw runtime user, potentially compromising system integrity and confidentiality.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in openclaw version 2026.3.11. Users should upgrade to version 2026.3.11 or later to mitigate this vulnerability. No other workarounds are recommended.
