Openclaw cli: OpenClaw: Unicode canonicalization drift in node metadata policy classification could broaden node allowlists
Description
OpenClaw CLI has a vulnerability where Unicode canonicalization drift in node metadata policy classification can cause a paired node to bypass intended command restrictions. This allows the paired node to supply Unicode-confusable platform or deviceFamily metadata that passes metadata pinning but is classified differently during command policy resolution, broadening node command allowlists beyond intended defaults. The issue affects versions up to 2026.2.26 and is fixed in version 2026.3.1 by hardening metadata canonicalization and making unknown platform defaults more restrictive.

Technical Analysis
The OpenClaw CLI vulnerability involves a policy bypass within the paired-node trust boundary due to Unicode canonicalization drift in node metadata classification. Specifically, a paired node can provide Unicode-confusable 'platform' or 'deviceFamily' metadata that passes metadata pinning but is classified differently for command policy resolution. This discrepancy broadens the default node command allowlists, potentially expanding node command availability beyond intended restrictions. The fix involves hardening node metadata canonicalization against confusables and tightening defaults for unknown platforms by excluding sensitive commands unless explicitly allowlisted.
Potential Impact
This vulnerability allows a paired node to bypass command policy restrictions by exploiting differences in Unicode canonicalization of node metadata. As a result, the paired node can gain broader command execution capabilities than intended within the trust boundary, potentially leading to unauthorized command execution on the node.
Mitigation Recommendations
A patch is available in OpenClaw CLI version 2026.3.1 that addresses this issue by improving metadata canonicalization and restricting default command allowlists for unknown platforms. Users should upgrade to version 2026.3.1 or later to mitigate this vulnerability.
