Openclaw cli: OpenClaw vulnerable to path traversal (Zip Slip) in archive extraction during explicit installation commands (CVE-2026-28486)
Description
OpenClaw CLI versions from 2026.1.16-2 up to but not including 2026.2.14 contain a path traversal (Zip Slip) vulnerability in archive extraction during explicit installation commands. This flaw allows crafted archives to write files outside the intended extraction directory, potentially enabling arbitrary file writes as the current user. The vulnerability affects commands such as 'openclaw skills install', 'hooks install', 'plugins install', and 'signal install' when run against untrusted archives. It does not affect normal gateway operations or message receipt. The issue is fixed in version 2026.2.14.

Technical Analysis
A path traversal (Zip Slip) vulnerability exists in the OpenClaw CLI archive extraction process during explicit installation commands. When a user runs installation commands against a crafted archive, the extraction process may write files outside the intended directory, leading to arbitrary file writes with the current user's privileges. This can be exploited to achieve persistence or code execution if a user is tricked into installing a malicious archive. The vulnerability affects versions >=2026.1.16-2 and <2026.2.14 and is resolved in version 2026.2.14.
Potential Impact
An attacker who can convince a user to install a crafted archive via affected OpenClaw CLI commands can cause arbitrary file writes as the current user. This may lead to persistence or code execution under the user's privileges. There is no indication of exploitation in the wild. The impact is limited to users explicitly running installation commands on untrusted archives.
Mitigation Recommendations
A fix is available in OpenClaw CLI version 2026.2.14. Users should upgrade to this version or later to remediate the vulnerability. Avoid running installation commands against untrusted archives until patched.
