Technical Analysis

The OpenClaw CLI has a vulnerability (CVE-2026-41336) in versions >=2026.1.29 and <2026.3.31 where the workspace .env file can override the OPENCLAW_BUNDLED_HOOKS_DIR environment variable. This override enables an attacker to replace trusted default bundled hooks with malicious hook code from an untrusted workspace. The vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 score of 7.8, indicating high severity, with impacts on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The issue was fixed in commit 330a9f98cb29c79b1c16a2117e03d6276a0d6289 and included in version 2026.3.31.

Potential Impact

An attacker with the ability to control or influence the workspace .env file can override the bundled hooks directory, causing the OpenClaw CLI to load attacker-supplied hook code. This can lead to full compromise of the CLI's execution environment, impacting confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the system where the CLI is run.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade OpenClaw CLI to version 2026.3.31 or later, where the vulnerability is patched. Versions prior to 2026.3.31 are vulnerable. No other mitigation is indicated by the vendor advisory.
