Openclaw cli: OpenClaw: Workspace plugin auto-discovery allowed code execution from cloned repositories (CVE-2026-32920)

Published: 08/13/2026 (08/13/2026, 17:21:32 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: openclaw-cli

Description

OpenClaw CLI versions up to 2026.3.11 automatically load workspace plugins from the .openclaw/extensions/ directory in the current workspace without requiring explicit trust. This behavior allows a maliciously crafted repository to include a plugin that executes arbitrary code when OpenClaw is run from that directory. The vulnerability is fixed in version 2026.3.12, which requires explicit trusted state before loading workspace plugins.

Technical Analysis

OpenClaw CLI versions <= 2026.3.11 have an auto-discovery feature that loads plugins from the .openclaw/extensions/ directory inside the current workspace without an explicit trust or installation step. This allows a malicious repository to include a crafted workspace plugin that executes arbitrary code under the user's account when OpenClaw is run from that cloned directory. The vulnerability is addressed in version 2026.3.12 by requiring an explicit trusted state before executing workspace plugins.

Potential Impact

An attacker who can convince a user to run OpenClaw in a maliciously crafted repository can achieve arbitrary code execution with the privileges of the user running the software. This can lead to compromise of the user's environment and data.

Mitigation Recommendations

Users should update OpenClaw to version 2026.3.12 or later, where workspace plugin loading requires explicit trust before execution. Until updated, users should avoid running OpenClaw inside untrusted or cloned repositories to prevent automatic execution of malicious plugins.
