Source: GCVE Database
Product: openclaw-cli

Description

A race condition vulnerability in the OpenClaw CLI ZIP extraction process allows an attacker to write files outside the intended extraction directory by exploiting a parent-directory symlink rebind between path validation and file write. This issue affects versions prior to 2026.3.2 and has been fixed in version 2026.3.2.

Technical Analysis

The OpenClaw CLI ZIP extraction function validated output paths before writing files, but the write operation occurred in a separate step. This separation allowed a local race condition where a parent-directory symlink could be rebound after validation but before writing, causing files to be written outside the intended extraction root directory. The vulnerability affects openclaw versions >=2026.1.29 and <2026.3.2. The patch hardens the write process by binding writes to the opened file handle identity, avoiding the pre-write truncate race, and adding shared file descriptor realpath verification.

Potential Impact

An attacker able to race the ZIP extraction process can cause files to be written outside the intended directory, potentially overwriting or creating files in arbitrary locations. This could lead to unauthorized file modification or code execution depending on the context in which OpenClaw is used.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available and has been released in openclaw version 2026.3.2. Users should upgrade to version 2026.3.2 or later to remediate this vulnerability.
