Product: openclaw-cli

Description

A path traversal vulnerability in the OpenClaw CLI ZIP extraction logic allowed writes outside the intended extraction directory when a pre-existing symlink was present in the destination path. This could lead to arbitrary file writes outside the extraction root. The issue affects openclaw versions up to and including 2026.2.21-2 and is fixed in version 2026.2.22. The vulnerability requires attacker-controlled archive extraction and a pre-existing symlink in the destination path.

Technical Analysis

OpenClaw CLI's ZIP extraction logic had a path confinement bypass vulnerability due to lexical output-path checks that did not prevent traversal through existing symlinks in the destination path. This allowed an attacker to write files outside the intended extraction root if a symlink was pre-seeded in the extraction destination. The fix involves rejecting symlink traversal in destination path segments, validating that resolved paths remain inside the extraction root, using no-follow file opens where supported, and adding regression tests to prevent recurrence.

Potential Impact

An attacker able to supply a ZIP archive for extraction and with a pre-existing symlink in the extraction destination path could cause arbitrary file writes outside the intended extraction directory. This could lead to overwriting or creating files in unintended locations, potentially impacting system integrity or security.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available in openclaw version 2026.2.22 that addresses this vulnerability by blocking symlink traversal during ZIP extraction and enforcing path confinement. Users should upgrade to version 2026.2.22 or later to remediate this issue.
