Technical Analysis

The OpenClaw CLI message tool accepted mediaUrl and fileUrl alias parameters without enforcing the sandbox localRoots validation that applies to the canonical media path. This allowed callers restricted to sandbox media roots to read arbitrary local files by exploiting these alias parameters. The vulnerability affects versions from 2026.1.29 up to but not including 2026.3.24. The issue was fixed by commit 1d7cb6fc03, which closed the sandbox media root bypass for these aliases.

Potential Impact

An attacker or caller constrained to sandbox media roots could bypass these restrictions and read arbitrary local files on the system by using the mediaUrl or fileUrl alias parameters. This results in a confidentiality impact (high) without affecting integrity or availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available and the vulnerability is fixed in OpenClaw CLI version 2026.3.24 and later. Users should upgrade to version 2026.3.24 or newer to remediate this issue.
