Openclaw cli: OpenClaw's sandboxed sessions_spawn now enforces sandbox inheritance for cross-agent spawns (CVE-2026-32048)

Source: GCVE Database
Product: openclaw-cli

Description

OpenClaw CLI versions up to 2026.2.26 allow sandboxed sessions to spawn child sessions under agents with sandboxing disabled, potentially reducing runtime confinement. This cross-agent spawning flaw could let a sandboxed requester escape into an unsandboxed environment. The issue is fixed in version 2026.3.1 by enforcing sandbox inheritance at spawn time, rejecting spawns that would downgrade confinement.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in OpenClaw CLI (CVE-2026-32048) involves the sessions_spawn feature in sandboxed sessions. A sandboxed session could spawn a child session under an agent configured with sandbox.mode="off", effectively escaping sandbox confinement. This occurs in mixed-agent setups that allow cross-agent spawning. The fix enforces spawn-time sandbox inheritance, rejecting any spawn attempts that would result in an unsandboxed child runtime when the requester is sandboxed.

Potential Impact

In affected versions, a sandboxed session can bypass its confinement by spawning a child session under an unsandboxed agent, potentially allowing privilege or security boundary escalation within the runtime environment. This reduces the effectiveness of sandboxing protections in mixed-agent deployments.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available and should be applied. Versions 2026.3.1 and later enforce sandbox inheritance at spawn time, preventing sandbox escapes via cross-agent spawning. Users should upgrade to 2026.3.1 or later to remediate this vulnerability.
