Description

OpenClaw npm package versions before 2026.8.1 have a vulnerability where per-chat tool policies for Codex app-server runtime tools are not properly enforced. This allows participants in lower-trust conversations to bypass configured allowlists and access native command, process, file, and patch tools. The vulnerability is fixed in version 2026.8.1.

Technical Analysis

The OpenClaw npm package prior to version 2026.8.1 fails to correctly enforce per-chat tool allowlists for Codex app-server runtime tools. While conversation-level tools.allow rules filtered OpenClaw tools, they did not restrict the shell, process, file, and patch tools owned by the Codex runtime. Consequently, a participant in a restricted conversation could trigger the Codex agent and access native command and file tools, bypassing the allowlist. The impact depends on the host permissions and sandbox configuration of the runtime environment. This issue is addressed and fixed in version 2026.8.1.

Potential Impact

An attacker or participant in a lower-trust conversation could bypass configured per-chat tool allowlists and gain access to native command execution and file manipulation tools within the Codex runtime environment. This could lead to high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impacts depending on the host environment's permissions and sandboxing. The CVSS v3.1 score is 8.8 (high severity), reflecting network attack vector, low attack complexity, low privileges required, no user interaction, and high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade OpenClaw to version 2026.8.1 or later, where the issue is fixed. No other mitigation is required as the vulnerability is resolved in the official patch.
