Description

OpenClaw versions prior to 2026.8.1 contain a vulnerability where the working directory context is not bound to reusable exec approvals. This flaw allows attackers with an allow-always approval to execute approved commands in different directories, potentially affecting unreviewed files or repositories with different consequences.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in OpenClaw versions before 2026.8.1 involves a failure to bind the working directory context to reusable exec approvals. As a result, an attacker who has an allow-always approval can reuse that approval to run the same command in directories other than the originally approved one. This can lead to executing commands against unreviewed files or repositories, which may have materially different effects than intended. The CVSS 3.1 score is 7.3, indicating a high severity with network attack vector, low attack complexity, requiring low privileges and user interaction, and impacting confidentiality and integrity but not availability.

Potential Impact

Attackers with an allow-always approval can reuse approved commands in different directory contexts, potentially executing commands against unreviewed files or repositories. This can lead to unauthorized access or modification of sensitive data, impacting confidentiality and integrity. The vulnerability does not affect availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in OpenClaw version 2026.8.1. Users should upgrade to this version or later to ensure the working directory context is properly bound to reusable exec approvals, preventing the reuse of approvals in unintended directories.
