Product: pdfly

Description

A vulnerability in pdfly's pypdf component allows an attacker to craft a malicious PDF that triggers an infinite loop during text extraction in layout mode. This can cause denial of service by hanging the extraction process. The issue affects versions from 0.4.0 up to but not including 0.5.1_21. An official fix is available in pypdf version 6.13.0. For those unable to upgrade immediately, applying the changes from the referenced pull request is recommended.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-54530 describes a vulnerability in pdfly's pypdf library where specially crafted PDFs cause an infinite loop when extracting fonts in layout mode. This flaw can be exploited to cause a denial of service condition by hanging the text extraction process. The vulnerability affects versions >=0.4.0 and <0.5.1_21. The issue has been addressed and fixed in pypdf version 6.13.0. Workarounds include applying code changes from PR #3830 if upgrading is not feasible.

Potential Impact

An attacker can cause a denial of service by crafting a PDF that triggers an infinite loop during font retrieval in layout-mode text extraction. This impacts availability by potentially hanging or crashing the application performing the extraction. There is no indication of privilege escalation, data disclosure, or code execution from the provided information.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade to pypdf version 6.13.0 or later where the vulnerability is fixed. If upgrading immediately is not possible, apply the changes from pull request #3830 as a temporary workaround. No other mitigation steps are indicated.
