Source: GCVE Database
Product: pdfly

Description

A vulnerability in pdfly's pypdf library allows crafted PDFs with many embedded files to cause long runtimes when accessed via the dictionary-based API. This can degrade performance but does not indicate code execution or data compromise. The issue is fixed in pypdf version 6.19.0. Users unable to upgrade immediately can apply the changes from the referenced pull request as a workaround.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-102999 describes a performance-related vulnerability in the pdfly pypdf library where an attacker can craft a PDF containing a large number of embedded files. When these embedded files are accessed through the dictionary-based API, it can cause prolonged runtimes, potentially leading to denial of service conditions. The vulnerability has been addressed and fixed in pypdf version 6.19.0. A workaround is available by applying the changes from pull request #4081 if upgrading is not immediately possible.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows an attacker to cause long runtimes (performance degradation) by crafting PDFs with many embedded files accessed via the dictionary-based API. There is no indication of privilege escalation, code execution, or data leakage. The impact is limited to potential denial of service through resource exhaustion.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade to pypdf version 6.19.0 or later to apply the official fix. If upgrading is not feasible immediately, apply the changes from pull request #4081 as a temporary workaround.
