Product: pdfly

Description

A vulnerability in pdfly's pypdf library allows crafted PDF files with long indirect object headers not terminated by whitespace to cause long runtimes and large memory usage during parsing. This can lead to denial of service conditions due to resource exhaustion. The issue affects versions from 0.4.0 up to but not including 0.5.1_26. An official fix is available in pypdf version 6.18.0. If upgrading is not immediately possible, applying the changes from pull request #4055 is recommended as a workaround.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-102994 describes a vulnerability in the pdfly pypdf library where parsing PDF documents containing long indirect object headers without whitespace termination can cause excessive runtimes and memory consumption. This behavior can be exploited by an attacker crafting malicious PDFs to degrade service availability. The vulnerability affects versions >=0.4.0 and <0.5.1_26. The issue has been addressed in pypdf version 6.18.0, which includes a patch to prevent this resource exhaustion scenario.

Potential Impact

An attacker can cause denial of service by supplying a specially crafted PDF that triggers long runtimes and high memory usage during parsing. This can degrade or disrupt service relying on the vulnerable pypdf versions. There is no indication of code execution or data leakage from the provided information.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade to pypdf version 6.18.0 or later to apply the official fix. If immediate upgrade is not feasible, apply the changes from pull request #4055 as a temporary workaround. No other mitigation steps are indicated by the vendor advisory.
