Prior to version 7.3.0, an unprivileged, project-confined Incus user (a non-admin TLS/RBAC identity with can_create_images and can_create_instances)… (CVE-2026-63125)
Description
Incus versions prior to 7.3.0 contain a critical vulnerability allowing an unprivileged, project-confined user with specific permissions to execute arbitrary code as root on the host. This occurs because a crafted image can include a backup.yaml file as a symlink to an arbitrary host file, which the root daemon follows when writing backup files. The issue is patched in version 7.3.0.

Technical Analysis
Incus, a system container and virtual machine manager, has a vulnerability (CVE-2026-63125) in versions before 7.3.0 where an unprivileged, project-confined user possessing can_create_images and can_create_instances permissions can escalate privileges to root. This is achieved by supplying a crafted image that contains a backup.yaml file as a symbolic link to a host file. When the Incus root daemon writes the instance's backup file, it follows this symlink, enabling arbitrary code execution as root. Version 7.3.0 includes a patch that fixes this vulnerability.
Potential Impact
An attacker with limited permissions (non-admin TLS/RBAC identity with can_create_images and can_create_instances) can execute arbitrary code with root privileges on the host system. This leads to full system compromise, including complete confidentiality, integrity, and availability loss.
Mitigation Recommendations
Upgrade Incus to version 7.3.0 or later, where this vulnerability is patched. No other mitigations are indicated by the vendor advisory.
