Prior to versions 4.1.135.Final and 4.2.15.Final, netty_unix_socket_recvFd sets msg_control to char control[CMSG_SPACE(sizeof(int))] (line 940) — 24… (CVE-2026-45536)
Description
Netty versions prior to 4.1.135.Final and 4.2.15.Final contain a resource leak vulnerability in the netty_unix_socket_recvFd function. The issue arises when receiving SCM_RIGHTS control messages carrying two file descriptors, causing the function to skip closing leaked file descriptors due to an incorrect length check. This leads to file descriptor leaks when using DomainSocketChannel with DomainSocketReadMode.FILE_DESCRIPTORS enabled. The vulnerability has been patched in versions 4.1.135.Final and 4.2.15.Final.

Technical Analysis
Netty, a network application framework, had a vulnerability in versions before 4.1.135.Final and 4.2.15.Final where the netty_unix_socket_recvFd function incorrectly handled SCM_RIGHTS control messages carrying two file descriptors. The function sets msg_control to a buffer sized for one int, but when two file descriptors are received, the cmsg_len matches the buffer size exactly, causing the kernel to install both file descriptors. However, the subsequent length check expects a size for one int, causing the code to skip reading and closing the file descriptors. This results in leaking two file descriptors per message. The issue is reachable via Epoll/KQueue DomainSocketChannel when DomainSocketReadMode.FILE_DESCRIPTORS is enabled. The vulnerability is patched in versions 4.1.135.Final and 4.2.15.Final.
Potential Impact
The vulnerability causes a resource leak of file descriptors in affected Netty versions when receiving certain control messages. This can lead to exhaustion of file descriptors in the affected process, potentially causing denial of service or degraded performance. There is no direct impact on confidentiality or integrity reported.
Mitigation Recommendations
Upgrade Netty to version 4.1.135.Final or later, or 4.2.15.Final or later, where this issue is patched. No other mitigation is indicated or required.
