Technical Analysis

Progress MarkLogic Server 12.x releases prior to 12.1.0 and 11.x releases prior to 11.3.7 do not consistently validate TLS certificate hostnames for some outbound connections. This improper validation could be exploited by an attacker positioned on the network to intercept or alter communications between the server and external services. The vulnerability is identified as CWE-297 (Improper Validation of Certificate with Host Mismatch).

Potential Impact

An attacker with network positioning could exploit this vulnerability to intercept or modify communications that rely on TLS for confidentiality and integrity, potentially leading to data exposure or manipulation. The vulnerability does not affect availability. The CVSS 3.1 score is 7.4 (High), reflecting the network attack vector, high impact on confidentiality and integrity, and no privileges or user interaction required.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in Progress MarkLogic Server versions 12.1.0 and 11.3.7 and later. Users should upgrade to these versions or later to ensure proper TLS hostname validation. Since this is not a cloud service, remediation depends on applying the vendor's official patches. Patch status is confirmed by the version information in the description.
