Description

psd-tools versions prior to 1.17.4 have a vulnerability in PSDImage.composite() and PSDImage.numpy() where output buffers are allocated based on attacker-controlled PSD header geometry without proper validation. This can lead to excessive memory allocation and potential denial of service due to out-of-memory conditions. The issue is fixed in version 1.17.4.

Technical Analysis

The Python package psd-tools, used for handling Adobe Photoshop PSD files, contains a vulnerability in versions before 1.17.4. Specifically, the functions PSDImage.composite() and PSDImage.numpy() allocate output buffers using dimensions and parameters (width, height, channels, depth, and per-layer rectangles) derived from the PSD header before validating these values against the actual file data. An attacker can craft a PSD file with malicious header geometry to cause multi-gigabyte memory allocations, potentially exhausting system memory and causing service termination. Additionally, PSDImage.composite() may return a black image with only a warning instead of raising an exception, which could mask the issue. This vulnerability is addressed in version 1.17.4.

Potential Impact

This vulnerability can cause denial of service by exhausting system memory when processing specially crafted PSD files, leading to service termination or crashes. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity reported. The CVSS score is 7.5 (high impact on availability).

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade to psd-tools version 1.17.4 or later, where this issue is fixed. No other mitigations are indicated by the vendor advisory.
