Description

Pypdf2 versions prior to 6.12.2 contain a vulnerability where an attacker can craft a specially designed PDF that causes long runtimes during processing. This issue arises when accessing a stream using the /FlateDecode filter with a PNG predictor. The vulnerability has a medium severity score and does not impact confidentiality or integrity but affects availability by causing performance degradation. It is fixed in version 6.12.2.

Technical Analysis

Pypdf2, a pure-Python PDF library, has a vulnerability (CVE-2026-49460) in versions before 6.12.2 where processing a crafted PDF with a /FlateDecode filter stream using a PNG predictor can lead to prolonged runtimes. This can degrade availability by causing the application to consume excessive processing time. The CVSS 3.1 base score is 3.3 (medium), reflecting low attack complexity and limited privileges required, but no impact on confidentiality or integrity. The vulnerability is resolved in pypdf2 version 6.12.2.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability impacts availability by causing long runtimes when processing maliciously crafted PDFs. There is no confidentiality or integrity impact. The attack requires local privileges and user interaction is not required. No known exploits are reported in the wild.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade to pypdf2 version 6.12.2 or later where this vulnerability is fixed. No other mitigation is indicated by the vendor advisory.
