Description

Python Tornado versions before 6.5.9 do not limit the number of query string fields in HTTPServerRequest.__init__. This allows remote attackers to send unauthenticated GET requests with thousands of query parameters, causing event-loop stalling and degrading response times for all clients sharing the same IOLoop.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in Python Tornado prior to version 6.5.9 involves the failure to limit the number of query string fields processed in the HTTPServerRequest.__init__ method. Remote attackers can exploit this by sending GET requests with an unbounded number of query parameters, which causes the Tornado event loop to stall. This results in degraded response times for all clients using the same IOLoop, effectively causing a denial-of-service condition.

Potential Impact

An attacker can cause event-loop stalling by sending requests with thousands of query parameters, leading to degraded response times for all clients sharing the same IOLoop. This impacts availability but does not affect confidentiality or integrity.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in Tornado version 6.5.9. Users should upgrade to version 6.5.9 or later to remediate this vulnerability.
