Source: GCVE Database
Product: rabbitmq-server

Description

RabbitMQ versions prior to 3.13.15, 4.0.20, 4.1.11, 4.2.6, and 4.3.0 contain a vulnerability where the Web-MQTT and Web-STOMP handlers do not validate the Origin header on WebSocket upgrades. When configured with ssl_cert_login=true or use_http_auth=true, this can allow an attacker's JavaScript running in a victim's browser to authenticate as the victim. The issue does not affect default configurations and is fixed in the stated versions.

Technical Analysis

RabbitMQ messaging broker versions before 3.13.15, 4.0.20, 4.1.11, 4.2.6, and 4.3.0 have a vulnerability in the Web-MQTT and Web-STOMP WebSocket handlers due to lack of Origin header validation during WebSocket upgrade. Under non-default configurations (ssl_cert_login=true or use_http_auth=true), an attacker can leverage this to authenticate as the victim via malicious JavaScript in the victim's browser. The vulnerability is resolved in the specified fixed versions.

Potential Impact

An attacker with JavaScript execution in a victim's browser can authenticate as the victim to RabbitMQ services when non-default authentication configurations are enabled. This could lead to unauthorized access to messaging services. The vulnerability is harmless under default in-band CONNECT credential configurations.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade RabbitMQ to versions 3.13.15, 4.0.20, 4.1.11, 4.2.6, or 4.3.0 or later, where this issue is fixed. If upgrading is not immediately possible, review and avoid using the non-default configurations use_http_auth=true or ssl_cert_login=true for Web-STOMP and Web-MQTT plugins respectively, as the vulnerability requires these settings to be enabled.
