Red Hat has released updated packages for bubblewrap and flatpak to address this vulnerability. Users of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.4 should apply the security update as described in the Red Hat advisory RHSA-2024:6418 and the referenced article https://access.redhat.com/articles/11258. Applying these updates will remediate the issue. No additional mitigations are specified or required beyond applying the official patches.
Description
A security vulnerability (CVE-2024-42472) affecting bubblewrap and flatpak on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.4 allows applications using the persistent= (--persist) option to access files outside their sandbox. Bubblewrap is a setuid binary used as a core execution engine for unprivileged containers on kernels without user namespaces. This issue could lead to unauthorized file access from sandboxed applications.
