Technical Analysis

FreeRDP, an open-source RDP client, contains multiple critical memory safety vulnerabilities including heap-use-after-free, heap-buffer-overflow, and NULL pointer dereference bugs across various components such as FastGlyph parsing, AUDIN format renegotiation, video timer, input event handling, and USB interface selection. Additionally, an arbitrary code execution vulnerability exists via crafted RDP server messages. These vulnerabilities are collectively tracked under multiple CVEs (CVE-2026-22852, CVE-2026-22854, CVE-2026-22856, CVE-2026-23732, CVE-2026-23948, CVE-2026-24491, CVE-2026-24675, CVE-2026-24676, CVE-2026-24679, CVE-2026-24681, CVE-2026-24683, CVE-2026-24684, CVE-2026-31806). Red Hat has released updated packages for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 and related variants to remediate these vulnerabilities.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could lead to denial of service conditions or arbitrary code execution on affected systems running vulnerable FreeRDP versions. This could allow attackers to crash the client or execute malicious code remotely via crafted RDP server messages, potentially compromising system integrity and confidentiality.

Mitigation Recommendations

Red Hat has released updated freerdp packages for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 and related products to address these vulnerabilities. Users should apply these official security updates promptly following Red Hat's guidance at https://access.redhat.com/articles/11258. No additional mitigations are specified beyond applying the vendor-provided patches.
