Description

Git is a distributed revision control system with a decentralized architecture. As opposed to centralized version control systems with a client-server model, Git ensures that each working copy of a Git repository is an exact copy with complete revision history. This not only allows the user to work on and contribute to projects without the need to have permission to push the changes to their official repositories, but also makes it possible for the user to work with no network connection. Security Fix(es): * git: Recursive clones RCE (CVE-2024-32002) * git: RCE while cloning local repos (CVE-2024-32004) For more details about the security issue(s), including the impact, a CVSS score, acknowledgments, and other related information, refer to the CVE page(s) listed in the References section.

Technical Analysis

This advisory addresses two security vulnerabilities in Git, a distributed version control system. CVE-2024-32002 involves a remote code execution vulnerability triggered by recursive clones, while CVE-2024-32004 involves RCE during cloning of local repositories. Both vulnerabilities could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code during Git operations. The affected products include Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.4 variants. Red Hat has provided updated Git packages to fix these issues as detailed in advisory RHSA-2024:6028.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on affected systems during Git clone operations, potentially leading to system compromise. The vulnerabilities affect Git operations involving recursive cloning and cloning of local repositories. Red Hat rates the security impact as Important (high severity). There are no known exploits in the wild at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

Red Hat has released updated Git packages for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.4 variants that address these vulnerabilities. Users should apply the security update as described in Red Hat advisory RHSA-2024:6028 and the referenced article https://access.redhat.com/articles/11258. Applying the official update fully mitigates these vulnerabilities.
