Description

Git is a distributed revision control system with a decentralized architecture. As opposed to centralized version control systems with a client-server model, Git ensures that each working copy of a Git repository is an exact copy with complete revision history. This not only allows the user to work on and contribute to projects without the need to have permission to push the changes to their official repositories, but also makes it possible for the user to work with no network connection. Security Fix(es): * git: Recursive clones RCE (CVE-2024-32002) * git: RCE while cloning local repos (CVE-2024-32004) For more details about the security issue(s), including the impact, a CVSS score, acknowledgments, and other related information, refer to the CVE page(s) listed in the References section.

Technical Analysis

Git, a distributed version control system, has two security vulnerabilities that allow remote code execution: CVE-2024-32002 involves RCE during recursive clones, and CVE-2024-32004 involves RCE while cloning local repositories. These vulnerabilities affect Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.6 variants including Advanced Mission Critical Update Support, Update Services for SAP Solutions, and Telecommunications Update Service. Red Hat Product Security has rated the update as important and has released patched Git packages (version 2.31.8-3.el8_6) to fix these issues. The advisory references Red Hat Security Advisory RHSA-2024:6027 and provides links for applying the update.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on affected systems during Git cloning operations, potentially compromising system integrity. The severity is rated as high by the source data, indicating significant risk if unpatched.

Mitigation Recommendations

Red Hat has released an official security update (RHSA-2024:6027) that patches these vulnerabilities in Git version 2.31.8-3.el8_6 for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.6 variants. Users should apply the provided update packages promptly following Red Hat's guidance at https://access.redhat.com/articles/11258. No alternative mitigations or workarounds are specified in the advisory.
