Technical Analysis

The gstreamer1-plugins-good package for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 contains several security flaws that allow remote code execution. These include heap-based buffer overflows triggered by malformed MRF and PNG files (CVE-2026-18296 and CVE-2026-18298), a use-after-free vulnerability in the rtpsbcdepay plugin (CVE-2026-18299), and another remote code execution via MRF file parsing (CVE-2026-18295). Red Hat has released updated packages to fix these vulnerabilities.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code remotely on affected systems running vulnerable versions of gstreamer1-plugins-good. This could lead to full system compromise depending on the privileges of the affected process.

Mitigation Recommendations

Red Hat has released updated gstreamer1-plugins-good packages for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 that address these vulnerabilities. Users should apply the official security update as described in Red Hat advisory RHSA-2026:59179. No additional mitigation steps are indicated by the vendor beyond applying the update.
